now, i'll be the first to admit that i don't fully understand the mechanics by which the semi-ubiquitous second life works. as such, i cannot tell whether this recruitment video, and accompanying promo website are in any way real institutions involving real people. what i can tell you though is that my brain watches this video, seizes up and then proceeds to demand a full and total cessation of all further exploration into the realm of the digital.
any takers?

am i qalified?
you're completely right every single thing in that is scary.
apparently there are world of war craft sweatshops in which enormous samurai businessmen whip pan-asians into beefing up characters on world of war craft. 14hr shifts behind computers. the characters / their attributes / their +4 mace are then transacted in both the real world for money and in the game...HOLY SHIT.
also...i've always thought it would make the best honours thesis to world exchange rates (or even labour shortages and prices in secondlife). like: can i buy a sword for $1AUD which is say $5warcraft dollars (stones?) then sell it in the game for $2 US then convert it back to AUD and net the profit. WARCRAFT ARBITRAGE!!! i think i just....yep...
well, you realise that you can already exchange linden's for american dollars? apparently the game has already produced a real world millionaire, a woman named ailin graef/anshe chong (second life name) who has made her money off virtual land ownership and virtual stock interests. what. the. fuck.
If you can spell qualifications you already have too many
this is really old now, but still worth a look. by julian dibbell, one of my fave web writers.
